Watch videos in a Linux terminal console

In Linux, there is a neat programm, which lets you watch videos in a Linux terminal console. The video will be displayed in ASCII characters (see: ASCII Table), which has a very unique feel to it.


All you have to do is open a new terminal window and issue the following command:

mplayer -vo caca MovieName.avi

Of course you have to make sure that MPlayer is installed.

This trick isn´t really suited for watching whole movies, but it´s a nice way to check out what a video would look like if it would only use ASCII characters.
