If you are using the LTS (Long Term Support) release of Ubuntu, you might want to upgrade to the normal version of Ubuntu to get all the new versions of the programs (but with shorter support).

Here is how to upgrade Ubuntu from LTS to normal:

  • First, you have to allow Ubuntu LTS to be upgraded to the normal version. Edit etc/update-manager/release-upgrades:
sudo vi etc/update-manager/release-upgrades

Search for

[DEFAULT]
Prompt=lts

and change it to

[DEFAULT]
Prompt=normal

  • Then, you can do the upgrade:
sudo do-release-upgrade -d

Warning: Since this will pretty much change your whole system, you should backup your system first.
