Restart the desktop shell properly in Windows

Did you know that in the recent versions of Windows, there is a way to restart the desktop shell, besides from opening Task Manager and killing all explorer.exe tasks?

Here is how to restart the desktop shell in Windows:

  • Open the Start menu.
  • Hold down both the CTRL and the SHIFT key.
  • Right click on a free space inside the Start menu.
  • Click on Exit Explorer.

There, the desktop shell has been terminated. To start it again, open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc), click on File, click on Run, type explorer.exe and press enter.
