If you have installed Windows updates (either manually or automatically), after some time, Windows wants to perform a reboot.

Here is how to prevent Windows 8 from restarting itself after Windows updates have been applied:

  • Hit the Windows key and type
regedit

and press enter.

  • Go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU

(create it if it does not exist).

  • Create a new 32-bit DWORD called
NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers
  • Double-click it and give it a hex value of 1.
  • Reboot.

Note: this works for Windows 7 as well.
