It is easy to get an application shortcut to the Windows 8 Start Screen, but what about files? Wouldn´t it be great if there was an entry in the context menu, so that you can pin any file you want to the Start Screen?

Here is how to pin files to the Start Screen with the context menu:

  • Open notepad.
  • Copy the following into the editor:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell\pintostartscreen]
 "MUIVerb"="@shell32.dll,-51201"
 "NeverDefault"=""
 "Description"="@shell32.dll,-51202"
 "MultiSelectModel"="Single"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell\pintostartscreen\command]
 "DelegateExecute"="{470C0EBD-5D73-4d58-9CED-E91E22E23282}"
  • Save it as startmenu.reg
  • Double click the file and select Yes to add it to the registry.

Done, you can now right-click on any file and select Pin to Start to pin it to the Start Menu.
