Install Windows 7 to UEFI machine using USB

If you want to install Windows 7 to an UEFI machine using an USB key, you might run into some troubles. DVD installation works fine, but USB installation brings an error. This is because a startup file for USB and UEFI support is missing from the media.

Here is how to fix this:

  • Start an installed version of Windows 7 x64 and go to the directory
%SYSTEMROOT%\BOOT\EFI
  • In this directory search for the file BOOTMGFW.EFI.
  • Copy this file to your USB media to the directory
\EFI\BOOT
  • Rename the file to BOOTX64.EFI.

There, your USB key should now be able to boot up Windows 7.

Note: This should work for the x64 version of Windows 7.
