How to prevent a blank merge field in Microsoft Word

If you start a mailing list in Microsoft Word and one of your lines in the recipient list is empty (because perhaps a person had no title), the merge field becomes blank.


The solution to this is to set rules between the merge fields:

Put your curser between Merge Field1 and Merge Field2:

      Mailings – Rules – “If…Then…Else…”

Field name: the first Merge Field

Comparison: not equal to

Compare to: [empty]

Insert this text: make a blank

Otherwise insert this text: [empty]
