Fix the mouse lag in Windows 8.1

Windows 8.1 has a lot of improvements, one of them is, that it works better with high-DPI displays. But the downside of this is, that Microsoft had to change the way Windows reads the mouse data. This resulted in some games having problems getting the mouse coordinates, which then resulted in these games beeing laggy or having the mouse jumping around. Of course, this is a no-go, especially if you are playing a first person shooter and going after head shots ;-)

Here is how to fix the mouse lag in Windows 8.1:

  • Press the Windows key, type System, and click the System symbol.
  • Check which version of Windows you have (32- or 64-bit).
  • Depending on your version, download the 32 bit or the 64 bit version of the Microsoft patch which fixes this problem.
  • Install the patch and reboot.

Note: This patch doesn´t fix every game, but it helps with games like Call of Duty, Counter Strike or Half-Life 2.
