If you have tried a telnet session from the command line, you might wonder what happened to it, you will just get an error message. Well, for security reasons, telnet has to be activated first.

Here is how to enable telnet in Windows 8:

  • Open a cmd as administrator.
  • Type
optionalfeatures

and press enter.

  • When the Windows Features windows opens, search for Telnet Client and check it.
  • Press OK and wait until the feature has been activated.

You can now use telnet as you used to do.

Note: this works in Windows 7 as well.
