With Windows 8 also comes Microsoft´s Hyper-V. You just need to enable it.

Doing so allows you to create and run virtual machines (as long as you are not running in a virtual machine already).

Here is how to enable Hyper-V in Windows 8:

  • Press Windows Key + R.
  • Type OptionalFeatures.exe and hit enter.
  • Check Hyper-V and click OK to enable the feature.
  • You should see the Hyper-V Manager tile in the Start Screen on the right side.
  • Click it to start.
