What if you tried to configure Samba to the point nothing is working any more? And you do not have a backup of the configuration files? Then you will most likely have to start from scratch. But how can you do that?

Here is how to completely reset Samba configuration:

  • Uninstall your Samba server:
sudo apt-get remove samba samba-common --purge
  • Remove any remaining configuration files:
cd /etc/samba
sudo rm *
cd /
  • Reinstall the Samba server:
sudo apt-get install samba
  • Your Samba server is now freshly installed, you can edit the configuration under /etc/samba/smb.conf again.
