Change the URL of a website file

Files with the .website extension are the replacement for the ones with the .url extension. You can use .website files for the start menu in Windows 8. But sometimes, the URL inside the file needs to be changed (for example if the site does a automatic redirection and you cannot capture the original URl in time).

Sadly, if you just right-click on the file and select properties, there is no field that lets you change the URL directly.

Here is how to change the URL of a website file:

Really very simple if you know how.

  • Just open notepad.
  • Drag and drop the .website file into the editor.
  • Change the line starting with URL= into the URL you desire.
  • Save and close.

Your .website file will now point to the new URL.
