Safe mode is a troubleshooting option for Windows 8 that starts your computer in a limited state. Only the basic files and drivers necessary to run Windows 8 are started. The words Safe Mode appears in the corners of your monitor to identify which Windows mode you are using.

On the Windows versions before Windows 8, if you wanted to boot into Safe Mode, you had to press F8 to enter the Advanced Boot Options. Unfortunately, under Windows 8 this hast changed. Now you need to hold down Shift and press F8.

The best method to do this, is

  • Turn on your computer.
  • Hold down the Shift key .
  • As soon as the BIOS text is gone, repeatedly hit the F8 key.

Normally, if Windows 8 fails to boot more than once, it will automatically enter recovery (safe) mode as long as the disk it's stored on is still bootable. But this doesn´t seem to work all the time, so it is better to hit Shift + F8 instead.

If booting Windows to Safe Mode using the F8 key is an absolute must for you, check out Boot Windows 8 to Safe Mode using the F8 key.
